DAR ES SALAAM — Tanzanian energy and manufacturing conglomerate Amsons Group has entered into an agreement to acquire the downstream energy business of Geneva-based Oryx Energies in Tanzania.

The transaction transfers key retail service stations, fuel storage terminals, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distribution networks into local hands, advancing Amsons Group's regional supply chain strategy across East and Central Africa. Completion of the sale remains subject to regulatory approvals, including antitrust clearance from the Fair Competition Commission (FCC) and the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA).

Asset Footprint & Market Position

The acquisition combines Oryx’s extensive downstream network with Amsons’ existing oil marketing subsidiary, Camel Oil, creating a dominant domestic and regional fuel logistics platform:

  • Storage & Retail Scaling: Expands Amsons Group's fuel station footprint to 300 service stations and increases its total bulk fuel storage capacity to 800,000 metric tons.
  • LPG & Clean Energy Platform: Incorporates Oryx Gas, the market leader in Tanzania's LPG sector with a 36.8% market share. The platform positions Amsons at the center of East Africa's transition toward clean cooking fuels.
  • Regional Transit Hub: Leverages Dar es Salaam’s coastal storage terminals to serve landlocked trade corridors, facilitating bulk petroleum distribution into Zambia, Malawi, Burundi, and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Corporate Strategy & Divestment Context

The purchase marks the latest major infrastructure acquisition by Amsons Group, led by Managing Director Edha Nahdi, following aggressive expansion moves across East Africa.

For Oryx Energies, led by CEO Moussa Diao, the sale aligns with an ongoing strategic review and portfolio optimization across its African downstream assets.
