**LONDON & KIGALI** — [**British International Investment**](https://www.linkedin.com/company/british-international-investment/home/?ref=africainvestorreview.com) **(BII)**, the UK’s development finance institution and impact investor, has announced a **$7.0 million (\~NGN 11.55 billion)** debt facility to [**Okra Solar**](https://www.linkedin.com/company/okra-solar/about/?ref=africainvestorreview.com), an Australian-founded renewable technology company specializing in decentralized mesh-grid electrification.

Announced at the Global Off-Grid Solar Forum in Kigali, the transaction is structured as a flexible working capital facility designed to address supply-chain and lead-time bottlenecks for renewable energy developers in Nigeria.

The financing enables Okra Solar to procure long-lead-time components—including solar PV panels, batteries, and smart distribution hardware—upfront and in bulk, reducing equipment delivery timelines to Nigeria by more than two-thirds.

## Operational Scale & Mesh-Grid Architecture

Mesh-grids connect neighboring households via low-voltage DC interconnectors and smart energy pods, enabling rooftop solar generation and battery capacity to be shared dynamically across communities without requiring traditional mini-grid distribution poles or heavy AC infrastructure:

- **Target Connection Mandate:** The $7 million capital injection will fund equipment for approximately **150,000 new mesh-grid connections**, bringing clean, reliable electricity access to an estimated **750,000 people** in off-grid rural communities.
- **Capacity Expansion Multiplier:** The facility will expand Okra's installed connection base **tenfold**, building on its existing footprint of over **13,000 connected households** representing **2.3 MW of generation capacity**.
- **Synergy with DARES Program:** The inventory buffer allows local energy developers to deploy projects faster and claim results-based subsidy disbursements under Nigeria’s **Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES)** initiative.

## Working Capital Financing Mechanism

By shifting from project-by-project transactional procurement to bulk equipment stocking, BII’s working capital facility lowers unit hardware costs for local developers and mitigates foreign exchange and shipping delays:

- **Speed of Deployment:** Cuts average project lead times from down-payment to first household commissioning to under six months.
- **Regulatory & Overhead Efficiency:** Okra's low-voltage DC architecture eliminates land acquisition requirements and formal ESMP clearances in Nigeria, reducing upfront CAPEX for local developers.
