EBRD Backs Nigeria’s Beacon Power Services to Modernize National Electricity Grid Infrastructure
The European multilateral lender commits up to $10 million in senior debt as part of a $20.9 million digital grid technology package targeting loss reduction and revenue optimization across Nigerian utilities.
LAGOS — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has finalized a senior debt financing facility of up to $10 million for energy technology startup Beacon Power Services (BPS).
The investment forms the anchor debt tranche of a broader $20.9 million digital infrastructure program, supported by $7.5 million in parallel debt co-financing and additional corporate equity contributions. The capital will accelerate the deployment of smart metering architecture and grid management software across Nigeria’s regional electricity distribution companies (DisCos).
Grid Modernization & Revenue Recovery Mechanics
Founded by Chief Executive Officer Bimbola Adisa, Beacon Power Services develops enterprise grid management software, network visibility platforms, and data analytics tools designed to address operational inefficiencies across sub-Saharan Africa's power sector.
The investment addresses critical structural challenges in Nigeria's power distribution ecosystem:
- Aggregated Technical, Commercial, and Collection (ATC&C) Losses: Deploys automated Meter Data Management (MDM) systems and AI-enabled analytics to curb illegal connections, accurately measure power flow, and improve utility collection efficiency.
- DisCo Operational Performance: Integrates real-time grid monitoring software across active distribution networks, offering DisCos full visibility into local transformer loads and feeder line performance.
- Consumer Transparency: Enhances consumer billing precision through integrated mobile customer portals, giving end-users direct digital access to real-time consumption metrics and payment processing.
Institutional Strategy and Sovereign Alignment
The transaction marks a key development milestone following Nigeria’s formal admission as an EBRD country of operations in 2025. To date, the multilateral development bank has invested over €175 million across seven projects in the country alongside $100 million in trade finance facilities.
Alongside infrastructure deployment targets, BPS has formally committed to the UN’s Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs), establishing internal gender diversity frameworks to expand technical and executive leadership appointments for female professionals within the energy engineering sector.
