HELSINKI & LAGOS — Finnish impact investor Finnfund has finalized a €10 million ($10.9 million) senior debt facility for Bisedge Holdings, an African provider of electric material handling equipment and logistics-as-a-service solutions.

The transaction represents Finnfund’s inaugural electric vehicle (EV) deployment in Africa. The investment is backstopped by the EDFI Renewable Energy Transition (RET) program, a guarantee mechanism managed by the EDFI Management Company and funded by the European Union under its EFSD+ Global Gateway strategy.

Institutional Scale & Capital Structure

Founded in 2020 by Chief Executive Officer Christian Wessels and Group Chief Operating Officer Jasper von Hardenberg, Bisedge offers electric forklift fleets and intra logistics management through long-term Equipment-as-a-Service (EaaS) contracts. The company’s operational footprint is currently ~95% electric.

The €10 million debt facility accelerates Bisedge's growth phase following early-stage scaling supported by impact platform Trine:

  • Institutional Transition: Since 2021, Trine deployed approximately €16.5 million in early-stage capital raised from retail and impact investors. The new facility establishes a scalable co-investment model that transitions mature clean-tech operators into institutional DFI capital structures.
  • Fleet Expansion Markets: The capital will fund the rollout of electric material handling equipment across primary industrial hubs in Nigeria, Tanzania, and Kenya.
  • Decarbonization Metrics: Replacing conventional diesel forklifts with electric alternatives reduces carbon emissions by an estimated 37 tonnes of CO2CO2 per forklift annually in Nigeria.

Gender Inclusion and Executive Statements

Bisedge currently employs approximately 1,000 workers and operates Nigeria’s first dedicated training program for female forklift operators. The company has committed to increasing female participation across its technical workforce to at least 20 percent under its ESG roadmap.

“Bisedge aspires to lead the transition to electric material handling in Africa, and to prove that electric fleets deliver industry-leading uptime and reliability across our customers’ operations. The Finnfund facility gives us further capital to deliver our solutions to more customers and more markets,” said Christian Wessels, Co-Founder and CEO of Bisedge.
“Africa’s industrial and logistics sectors are growing rapidly, but electrification of material handling equipment remains at an early stage in many markets. At Finnfund, we are looking for investments that enable economic development while helping societies operate within planetary boundaries, and Bisedge is a strong example of this in practice,” added Justin Nthala, Senior Investment Manager at Finnfund.
