Healthleap Secures $38M Seed & Series A to Expand EHR Clinical AI Platform
Co-founded by South African siblings Josiah and Jemima Meyer, the healthtech startup closes a major funding round from Sequoia Capital, First Round Capital, and Hummingbird Ventures to scale its hospital risk-detection software across US health systems.
SAN FRANCISCO & CAPE TOWN — South African-founded clinical AI platform Healthleap has raised $38 million in combined Seed and Series A financing. The oversubscribed round was co-led by premier global venture capital firms Sequoia Capital, First Round Capital, and Hummingbird Ventures.
Healthleap was founded in 2022 by South African sibling duo Josiah Meyer (CEO) and Jemima Meyer (CRO), alongside CTO Ray Botha. The company originated in South Africa when Jemima, a practicing clinical dietitian, built an early software prototype as a spreadsheet to help her colleagues at a South African hospital systematically screen and treat disease-related malnutrition.
EHR Risk Analysis & Clinical Model
Hospitals face systemic understaffing and manual screening processes, leading to widespread undiagnosed conditions. In malnutrition alone, a condition costing the US healthcare system up to $58 billion annually, up to 50% of hospitalized patients are at risk, yet fewer than 9% receive a formal diagnosis due to relying on basic admission questions.
Healthleap delivers the first validated, electronic health record (EHR)-integrated AI screening layer built by clinicians for clinicians:
- Automated Record Auditing: Reads and analyzes each patient's complete electronic medical record every morning, including clinical notes, laboratory results, vital signs, order histories, and active problem lists, to flag overlooked medical risks without requiring manual nurse prompts.
- Non-Disruptive Integration: Pushes actionable risk scores directly into native, optimized EHR worklists so care teams see high-risk patients at the point of admission or during their hospital stay.
- Condition Expansion: Having proven its efficacy in disease-related malnutrition, the capital injection will back expansion into congestive heart failure (CHF), pressure ulcers, delirium, aspiration pneumonia, and hospital-acquired infections.
- Team Scaling & Security: Funds expansion across software engineering, sales, customer success, and product development while maintaining full HIPAA compliance and SOC 2 Type II security certifications.
Hospital Economics & Validated Outcomes
Running across leading US health systems, Healthleap’s predictive screening system is generating quantifiable clinical and economic impact:
- Penn Medicine System: A single Penn Medicine hospital reported $23.8 million in annual economic impact through a combination of length-of-stay reductions and accurate reimbursement capture.
- Reimbursement & Patient Identification: Enables health systems to capture ~$11,000 in legitimate reimbursement per severe malnutrition diagnosis. One partner health system saw a 39% increase in identified and treated malnutrition cases, driving $11 million in incremental revenue.
Investor & Executive Commentary
"Every week, millions of patients leave hospitals with unresolved health conditions that will erode their health and cost up to 10x more to treat later," explained Josiah Meyer, co-founder and CEO of Healthleap. "Finding them now is prevention, and it's a win for everyone. Patients get treated before they get sicker. Hospitals shorten stays and are paid for the care they deliver. Payers avoid the much larger cost of complications down the road."
"Healthleap is focused on finding patients who are being missed and getting them the care they need," stated Alfred Lin, Partner at Sequoia Capital. "The impact for both patients and hospitals has been inspiring, with one hospital seeing 39% more malnutrition cases identified and treated, and $11 million in incremental revenue in a single health system."
"We were immediately drawn to Healthleap’s bold vision: imagine if every hospital could use real-time AI to spot overlooked clinical risk, improve patient care, and unlock meaningful reimbursement revenue," added Josh Kopelman, co-founder and partner at First Round Capital.
