LIPTON Teas and Infusions Rebalances East African Footprint via Strategic Asset Sale to Browns Investments
Lipton Teas and Infusions has rebalanced its East African operational footprint through a strategic asset sale of its tea estates to Browns Investments, shifting its business model toward a partnership approach in the region.
NAIROBI / AMSTERDAM — Global tea manufacturer LIPTON Teas and Infusions has entered into a definitive agreement to transfer its plantation and production estates in Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania to Sri Lankan agribusiness giant Browns Investments PLC. Executed via Browns’ UAE-based investment vehicle, B Commodities ME FZE, the transaction includes 100% equity stakes in LIPTON’s operating subsidiaries in Rwanda and Tanzania, 98.56% of LIPTON Teas and Infusions Kenya PLC, and 51.99% of Limuru Tea PLC.
The deal converts LIPTON from a direct plantation owner into a strategic long-term buyer, securing high-quality tea supply while offloading upstream agricultural operations. The combined asset portfolio will elevate Browns Investments to the world's largest tea exporter, with an annual output reaching approximately 87 million kilograms.
“Browns is the perfect partner, with the credibility, capabilities and scale, to work with us to raise standards in the whole tea industry. The team's commitment to sustainability and community development aligns with our own,” said Nathalie Roos, Chief Executive Officer of LIPTON Teas and Infusions.
As part of the structural agreement, LIPTON and Browns have established localized community equity mechanisms. A 15% discounted stake in the main Kenyan operating entity will be allocated to local communities in Kericho and Bomet with a guaranteed dividend structure. Additionally, both entities pledged an initial 1 billion Kenyan Shillings (~€7 million) endowment to establish a Community Welfare Trust.
“We look forward to working hand-in-hand with LIPTON Teas and Infusions and local partners to foster a sustainable, responsible, and prosperous future for all,” added Kamantha Amarasekera, Chief Executive Director of Browns Investments.
LIPTON announced that full proceeds from the transaction will be reinvested directly into East Africa to back sustainable farming R&D, skills training, and local supply chain infrastructure. Key initiatives include funding the Lipton Tea Innovation & Technology Academy at Kabianga, Kenya, alongside developing regional low-nitrogen fertilizer ecosystems to lower input costs for local smallholders.
