M-KOPA Acquires Finnish Phone-Locking Firm KilpiTek for $8 Million
The fintech asset-financier acquires full ownership of the Tampere-based software developer to secure core device-locking IP and streamline global hardware sourcing.
NAIROBI & TAMPERE — African fintech and asset-financing platform M-KOPA has acquired Finnish software company KilpiTek Oy in an $8 million (approx. KES 1.04 billion) deal.
The acquisition, detailed in financial filings made to the UK’s Companies House, brings KilpiTek's proprietary device-locking technology directly under M-KOPA’s internal technology umbrella as the group expands its smartphone credit model across sub-Saharan Africa.
Vertical Integration of Core Pay-As-You-Go Tech
Headquartered in Tampere, Finland, KilpiTek specializes in remote device management and phone-locking software tools. M-KOPA relies on remote device locking to secure its pay-as-you-go asset financing, automatically disabling handset functionality when daily micro-installments or credit checks lapse.
Prior to the deal, M-KOPA relied on third-party security frameworks and manufacturer integrations, including tools provided by Samsung and HMD, to manage hardware compliance. Acquiring KilpiTek grants M-KOPA direct control over its device-locking software layer, enabling uniform security protocols across its entire hardware supply chain regardless of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners.
Deal Consideration and Financial Impact
The $8 million acquisition was structured with approximately one-third settled in cash, with the remainder structured through deferred or equity-based consideration.
The purchase supports M-KOPA's broader strategy to expand direct OEM sourcing and scale smartphone financing across key operating markets including Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. By internalizing its core security intellectual property, M-KOPA aims to lower hardware unit costs while strengthening risk controls across its growing loan book.
