**NAIROBI** —[M-KOPA](https://www.m-kopa.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com) has announced the successful closing of over $250 million in new investment, setting a new benchmark as one of the largest-ever capital raises for an African fintech company. The funding milestone coincides with two major operational achievements: welcoming its 3 millionth customer in Ghana, and surpassing $1 billion in cumulative value of products and services delivered to the underbanked.

The financing package is strategically split between equity and a massive sustainability-linked debt facility, achieved despite a significant global downturn in fintech investing.

The largest portion of the new equity round, totaling $36.5 million, was led by [Sumitomo Corporation](https://www.sumitomocorp.com/en/global?ref=africainvestorreview.com). The Japanese conglomerate brings decades of global investing experience and opens the door for potential strategic partnerships for [M-KOPA](https://www.m-kopa.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com). The equity round also saw follow-on investments from existing shareholders who share the company's vision for sustainability and commercial success, including [Blue Haven Initiative](http://www.bluehaveninitiative.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com), [Lightrock](https://www.lightrock.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com), [Broadscale Group](https://www.broadscale.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com), and Latitude (the sister fund to Local Globe).

On the debt side, [Standard Bank Group](https://www.standardbank.com/sbg/standard-bank-group?ref=africainvestorreview.com)—Africa’s largest bank and a long-term strategic partner that first provided commercial debt to [M-KOPA](https://www.m-kopa.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com) in 2016—led and arranged over $200 million in sustainability-linked debt financing. The lending consortium features a robust roster of development finance institutions and impact investors, including the [International Finance Corporation](https://www.ifc.org/en/home?ref=africainvestorreview.com) (IFC), [FMO (Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank)](https://www.fmo.nl/?ref=africainvestorreview.com), [British International Investment (BII)](https://www.bii.co.uk/en/?ref=africainvestorreview.com), Mirova SunFunder, Nithio, and funds managed by [Lion’s Head Global Partners](https://lionsheadglobalpartners.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com).

Founded in 2010, [M-KOPA](https://www.m-kopa.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com) was built on the hypothesis that combining daily digital micropayments with embedded device connectivity could create a highly scalable fintech platform. This pioneered the widely recognized 'pay-as-you-go' business model. While the company initially focused on solar panels and lighting products, it progressively added solar-powered appliances such as televisions and refrigerators to its offerings.

In 2020, [M-KOPA](https://www.m-kopa.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com) expanded its portfolio to include smartphones, recognizing them as critical tools for digital economic inclusion. Looking forward, the company is utilizing the new capital to test and roll out electric motorcycles in 2023, a move engineered to provide superior riding economics while actively reducing carbon emissions and air pollution.

> “At the top of our values list was 'maendeleo,' the Swahili word for 'progress,'” noted M-KOPA CEO [Jesse Moore](https://www.linkedin.com/in/jesse-moore-a366873/?ref=africainvestorreview.com) in a letter addressing the milestone. “It was repeated so often in discussions with our customers about what mattered in their lives, that we agreed it should be what mattered most in our company, too.”

According to the company, its product pipeline is deeply customer-driven, focusing on identifying essential tools for economic progress and engineering the right mix of technology, pricing, and distribution to make them affordable. This approach has yielded significant social dividends, with more than four in five [M-KOPA](https://www.m-kopa.com/?ref=africainvestorreview.com) customers reporting that the platform has positively impacted their lives.
