Miale Solar Secures €5M Debt Facility from Hivos-Triodos Fonds
The Swedish-Kenyan renewable energy developer secures institutional debt brokered by crowdfunding platform Trine to scale its Energy-as-a-Service, PPA, and lease-to-own deployments for commercial, industrial, and healthcare clients.
NAIROBI — Kenyan renewable energy developer Miale Solar Inventions Ltd has secured a €5 million (~$5.4 million) debt facility from Hivos-Triodos Fonds, an impact fund managed by Triodos Investment Management.
The financing transaction was arranged and structured in partnership with Swedish impact-investing platform Trine, which served as financial advisor and co-lender.
Capital Deployment & Business Model Expansion
The debt facility provides Miale Solar with the flexible institutional balance sheet capacity needed to accelerate its project deployment pipeline across East Africa:
- Target Capacity Expansion: Funds the rollout of 9 MW in new distributed solar photovoltaics (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) over the next 6 to 12 months.
- Contract Structures: Capitalizes Miale Solar’s Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS), Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), and lease-to-own models, removing upfront capital expenditure barriers for commercial off-takers.
- Healthcare Sector Priority: Directs clean energy and storage capacity to East African medical facilities to eliminate power disruptions to critical care units and diagnostic imaging systems while lowering grid tariffs.
Executive Statements
"We consider Triodos to have a proven track record in the field of sustainable finance and impact investing in the renewable energy sector," stated Eric Mwenda, Chief Financial Officer at Miale Solar Inventions. "This partnership is strategic to our goal of scaling our impact by accessing the resources needed to fully realize our project pipeline, particularly in the healthcare sector. We look forward to playing our part in supporting the development of Kenya and the wider East African region as a vibrant impact finance destination."
"The financing arrangement enhances the capacity of the company to meet emerging opportunities as they arise," added Eric Mwenda. "Speed is often a deciding factor in the solar energy value chain. When a client approaches us to own and operate a solar PV system, we must mobilize the necessary capital to meet their demand. Institutional credit lines allow us to operate more efficiently while reducing our dependence on ad hoc financing for individual projects."
