Summit Private Equity Fund II Acquires 40% Stake in Virtual Farmer to Accelerate Regional Agri-Finance Expansion
The investment by Summit Africa aims to unlock institutional funding across Southern Africa, targeting an agricultural sector that generates over R500 billion ($30.4 billion) in annual output in South Africa alone.
JOHANNESBURG — Summit Private Equity Fund II, managed by specialist investment manager Summit Africa, has acquired a 40% equity stake in Virtual Farmer, an agricultural supply and finance marketplace operating across South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and Mauritius.
The equity investment will support Virtual Farmer's geographic expansion throughout Southern Africa and fund the development of enhanced marketplace capabilities and digital tools.
Connecting Commercial Agriculture with Institutional Capital
Founded in 2019, Virtual Farmer operates a digital platform designed to bridge the persistent financing gap in Sub-Saharan agriculture. The platform connects large-scale commercial farming operations directly with institutional funding, structuring deals backed by contracted supply or off-take agreements to mitigate investment risk.
While South Africa's agricultural sector produces over R500 billion ($30.4 billion) in gross output annually, commercial producers often face structural barriers when securing competitive, long-term operational capital. Virtual Farmer's marketplace model enables institutional investors to deploy debt and equity into verified farming operations with clear market routes.
Deployment Strategy for Summit's Growth Fund
Launched in 2025, Summit Private Equity Fund II focuses on high-growth, defensive sectors across Southern Africa, with an emphasis on ESG integration and economic transformation.
The capital injection into Virtual Farmer will enhance financing access for large-scale producers, drive job creation across agricultural supply chains, and bolster regional food security by enabling commercial farmers to expand cultivation capacity and optimize output.
