NAIROBI — Absa Bank Kenya has officially confirmed Yusuf Omari as its substantive Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, following the completion of all necessary regulatory and internal approvals.

Omari had been steering the institution as interim Managing Director and CEO since July 1, 2026, stepping into the role after the resignation of former CEO Abdi Mohamed. His permanent appointment locks in a familiar, steady hand at a pivotal operational crossroads for one of the country's top financial institutions.

A Two-Decade Institutional Footprint

Omari’s history with Absa Bank Kenya spans more than twenty years, including a long-standing tenure as the bank's Chief Financial Officer beginning in 2009. Throughout his career with the institution, he has navigated multiple leadership transitions, previously stepping in as interim chief executive during prior shifts.

Beyond core financial planning, his executive trajectory encompasses deep functional oversight across treasury, risk management, compliance, governance, sustainability, strategy, and transformation. Academically, Omari holds an economics degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Business Administration in strategy from Strathmore Business School, and he is a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (FCPA).

Strategic Priorities for the Lender

Omari steps into the permanent role as Absa Bank Kenya looks to reinforce its market position, expand its corporate, business, and consumer franchises, and navigate a dynamic macroeconomic environment.

“I am deeply honoured by the confidence that the Board and Absa Group have placed in me through this appointment. Absa Bank Kenya has a strong foundation, an exceptional team and an important role to play in supporting Kenya's economic growth and development,” said Omari.

Absa Group leadership expressed strong confidence in the appointment, pointing to Omari's extensive institutional knowledge and proven performance track record.

“Yusuf’s appointment reflects his proven ability to lead, deliver sustainable growth and create long-term value,” noted Mohammed Nyaoga, Chairman of Absa Bank Kenya. “His extensive experience across the Bank, deep understanding of the Kenyan market, and strong track record... position him strongly to lead Absa Bank Kenya into its next chapter.”
