Helium Health Secures $2.5M Grant from Google.org
The Lagos-founded healthtech provider is selected as the sole African organization in Google.org's global cohort to deploy its HeliumMum AI platform across Lagos, Delta, Kano, and Oyo states.
LAGOS — Nigerian health-tech provider Helium Health has been awarded a $2.5 million (~NGN 3.4 billion) grant from Google.org after being selected for the Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Government Innovation.
Helium Health is the sole Nigerian and sub-Saharan African enterprise chosen among 15 global organizations selected from a competitive pool of over 2,600 applications worldwide. The global challenge allocates $30 million in total funding and technical assistance to organizations partnering with public sector institutions to enhance public services using artificial intelligence.
The non-dilutive capital deployment will support the three-year rollout of HeliumMum, Helium Health’s proprietary AI-driven maternal healthcare platform. The initiative will target 1.9 million women across four primary Nigerian jurisdictions, Lagos, Delta, Kano, and Oyo states, with Lagos acting as the central launchpad.
Program Deployment & Operational Metrics
The grant support incorporates both financial capital and technical acceleration from Google's internal product teams:
- Target Outcomes: HeliumMum seeks to connect 1.9 million expectant mothers to timely clinical interventions over the next three years, targeting a 30% reduction in maternal mortality across participating regional health corridors.
- Platform Stack: The platform integrates AI-powered predictive risk stratification, electronic medical record (EMR) systems, clinical decision-support tools for health workers, and real-time operational analytics dashboards for state healthcare agencies.
- Accelerator Participation: Beyond the $2.5 million funding, Helium Health will participate in a specialized Google.org accelerator program, receiving pro bono engineering, AI product design, and technical guidance from Google engineers.
Decade Historical Impact Baseline
The selection builds on Helium Health’s decade-long operational footprint across West and East Africa's health infrastructure:
- Patient & Clinical Reach: Over 3.5 million women reached with digital health tools, with 2.5 million+ total patients accessing care via Helium Health’s digital systems.
- Facility Digitization: Deployment across 700+ healthcare facilities and training delivered to 10,000+ healthcare professionals.
- Public Sector Integration: Active institutional engagements maintained with 200+ government stakeholders and public health agencies across the region.
Executive Statement
"AI holds incredible potential to transform public services, but there is often a gap between promise and practice. By equipping the 15 selected organisations with funding and pro bono support from Google's own AI experts, we are empowering the people closest to the problem to show what is truly possible. Together, we can ensure that AI makes a profound, positive difference in the everyday lives of communities worldwide," stated Maggie Johnson, Global Head of Google.org.
