Aries Media Ventures Launches Fund I for Sub-Saharan Media-Tech, Backs Initial Trio of Startups
The early-stage venture firm deploys capital from its inaugural fund into creator economy, events commerce, and venue booking platforms across Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, and South Africa.
NAIROBI — Early-stage venture investment firm Aries Media Ventures has officially launched its inaugural fund, Aries Media Ventures Fund I, targeting early-stage media-technology, digital media, and creator economy startups across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The fund has commenced capital deployment, backing its first cohort of three tech-enabled portfolio companies: Aktivate, HustleSasa, and Book Mahali.
Initial Portfolio Investments
The inaugural deployment addresses infrastructure, monetization, and distribution channels within Sub-Saharan Africa's media, entertainment, and hospitality verticals:
- HustleSasa: An events commerce and ticketing platform founded in 2021 by Peng Chen and Michael Denuh through the Antler accelerator in Nairobi. The platform provides event organizers with integrated tools for mobile-money and card payments, digital marketing, check-in logistics, and merchandise sales. Operating across Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Africa, HustleSasa has processed over 520,000 tickets for more than 4,000 clients.
- Book Mahali: A marketplace for venue and equipment rentals in Kenya connecting hosts with event organizers and content creators seeking physical spaces and hardware for production and creative use. The platform manages discovery, digital contracts, and payment settlement, allowing hosts to retain the majority of booking revenue.
- Aktivate: A creator marketing platform that connects digital content creators and influencers directly with brand campaigns, automating creator payouts and campaign analytics.
Investment Mandate & Market Opportunity
Aries Media Ventures Fund I focuses on early-stage seed and pre-Series A startups operating at the intersection of digital media, entertainment tech, and commerce:
- Target Sector: Media technology, creative industry software-as-a-service (SaaS), live event ticketing, and creator monetization platforms.
- Geographic Focus: Sub-Saharan Africa, with an initial emphasis on established tech hubs in East, West, and Southern Africa.
- Strategic Support: Beyond equity financing, Aries provides portfolio companies with access to international network networks of advisors, commercial operators, and global media industry partners to accelerate regional scaling.
