Bekia Raises $765K Seed Round Led by Madica to Scale Egyptian Waste-Tech Platform
Backed by Flourish Ventures' investment program, the digital waste-management startup will expand its engineering team, launch B2B software, and target cross-border growth.
CAIRO — Egyptian waste-collection digitization startup Bekia has officially closed a $765,000 seed funding round to accelerate the development of its consumer application and roll out its premier B2B software product.
The investment arrives as Egypt pursues an ambitious regulatory target to lift its national municipal recycling rate to 60% by 2027.
The financing round was led by Madica, the Africa-focused investment program affiliated with Flourish Ventures. Pan-African climate investor Catalyst Fund, which originally backed Bekia in 2023, participated as a re-investing shareholder, alongside Dakar-based Jambaar Capital.
Institutional Backing and Strategic Capital Deployment
Operating within a market where approximately 60,000 tonnes of municipal waste are generated daily, Bekia addresses a traditionally informal sector where collection runs primarily on cash and undocumented agreements. The newly secured $765,000 capital infusion will be allocated toward three core strategic priorities:
- Engineering Expansion: Scaling internal technical talent to support infrastructure development.
- Product Launch: Bringing Bekia Next to the commercial market for corporate clients.
- Regional Expansion: Testing the business model within a second African market outside Egypt.
"Egypt's recycling sector has always worked — it just worked invisibly, on cash and trust, with no record of any of it," noted Alaa Afifi, Founder and CEO of Bekia. "We built the software layer that changes that: a collector gets a transaction history, a factory gets traceable supply, a household learns what its waste is actually worth."
Platform Evolution and Traction
Founded in 2019 by Afifi, a computer science graduate of Cairo University, Bekia began as a consumer-facing application enabling households to schedule waste pickups, verify on-site material weighing at published rates, and receive direct digital disbursements.
The company has achieved significant operational milestones since 2023:
- Volume Diverted: Over 25,000 tonnes diverted from open landfills.
- User Base: Served more than 100,000 customers (97% women), with over 2,400 individuals generating income through the platform network.
- Retention & Growth: Maintained enterprise retention above 95% while growing more than sevenfold since 2023.
- Revenue Streams: Diversified income via enterprise contracts, household collections, and refurbished electronics sales introduced in June 2026.
Scheduled for launch in late October 2026, Bekia Next translates collection data into verified CO₂-avoidance certificates for corporate clients using standardized international carbon accounting methodologies, marking Bekia's transition into subscription-based SaaS offerings.
"What excites us about Bekia is how the team is drawing on its firsthand understanding of waste collection in Egypt to build a more interconnected, tech-driven ecosystem serving households, small businesses and large industrial waste producers," stated Emmanuel Adegboye, Head of Madica.
