Cascador and Sterling Bank Launch $200M Credit Backstop Fund for Nigerian SMEs
The credit guarantee mechanism combines commercial bank debt with catalytic backstops to unlock lower-interest liquidity for growth-stage Nigerian small and medium enterprises.
LAGOS — Entrepreneurship accelerator Cascador has partnered with Nigerian commercial lender Sterling Bank to launch a $200 million SME Credit Backstop Fund aimed at easing financing bottlenecks for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Nigeria.
The strategic vehicle addresses systemic collateral deficits and elevated risk premiums that historically restrict private enterprise growth, offering tailored credit structures and first-loss guarantee mechanisms.
Structure and Credit De-Risking Mechanics
The $200 million joint framework utilizes credit guarantee and backstop facilities to de-risk commercial lending:
- Risk-Sharing Framework: Cascador provides catalytic backstops, credit guarantees, and first-loss reserves, enabling Sterling Bank to extend loans at reduced interest margins without traditional heavy asset-collateral coverage.
- Hybrid Capital Structuring: Deploys flexible financing options—including blended debt, working capital lines, and performance guarantees—tailored to the cash flow models of mid-stage companies.
- Target Segments: Prioritizes high-impact sectors, including agribusiness, health, renewable energy, technology-enabled commerce, and education (aligned with Sterling Bank's H.E.A.R.T sector strategy).
Program Synergy and Leadership Context
The backstop facility integrates directly with Cascador’s existing ScaleUp program and Catalytic Fund, which provides intensive leadership development and technical advisory for Nigerian founders.
The credit facility allows Sterling Bank to expand its commercial loan book while leveraging Cascador’s due diligence and venture monitoring capabilities to maintain low non-performing loan (NPL) ratios across the SME portfolio.
