Edge Growth’s Ignite Fund Deploys R3.5M Debt to Woman-Owned Mining SME uNotho
The debt financing facility enables the Mpumalanga-headquartered logistics and waste management provider to fulfill a commercial supply contract with Seriti Power.
JOHANNESBURG — Edge Growth, one of South Africa’s leading small and medium enterprise (SME) investors with over R2.44 billion (~$138.8 million) in assets under management, has structured a R3.5 million (~$199,000) growth debt financing facility for uNotho Holdings (Pty) Ltd.
The capital deployment was executed through the Ignite Fund, a specialized multi-investor financing vehicle within Edge Growth’s fund management portfolio that provides early-stage growth capital and Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) support to SMEs. The fund counts South African mining and energy producer Seriti Holdings among its core institutional backers.
Contract Execution & Operational Scope
uNotho Holdings, a 100% black woman-owned industrial services provider, secured the R3.5 million facility to finance the procurement and delivery of two specialized waste trucks required to fulfill a commercial supply contract with Seriti Power:
- Targeted Capital Deployment: The transaction addressed purchase-order funding bottlenecks, allowing uNotho Holdings to deliver integrated waste management and bulk logistics services to Seriti Power’s mining operations.
- Co-Funding Architecture: Because the transaction reached the Ignite Fund's single-mandate limit of R3.5 million,Edge Growth structured the investment alongside co-funding commercial debt partners to meet the complete equipment procurement requirement.
- Corporate Profile: Founded in 2018 by Managing Director Makhosi Khoza, uNotho Holdings operates out of Mpumalanga, with regional branches in North West and Gauteng. The company offers waste management solutions, bulk hauling, commodity transport, and machinery rental for the mining, industrial, and construction sectors.
Macroeconomic Context & Sectoral Mandates
The transaction interfaces directly with regulatory procurement thresholds established under South Africa’s 2018 Mining Charter:
- Mining Charter Targets: The charter mandates that 80% of eligible mining services procurement expenditure be allocated to local South African companies, including a minimum target of 15% reserved for women-owned enterprises.
- Mining Contribution: The mining sector contributed approximately R477.1 billion (~$27.1 billion) to South Africa’s GDP in 2025.
- Credit Access Deficit: According to data from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), only approximately 5% of formal South African SMEs currently maintain access to traditional commercial credit facilities.
Executive Statements
"The funding provided meaningful support in enabling us to execute the supply and delivery of two waste trucks for Seriti Power, and we appreciate the role Edge Growth played in making the transaction possible," stated Makhosi Khoza, Founder and Managing Director of uNotho Holdings. "Although the transaction was quite demanding from a coordination and execution perspective, the Edge Growth team remained professional, responsive and solution-oriented throughout the process. The team demonstrated a good understanding of the practical realities involved in executing an ESD-funded transaction, and they worked with us to ensure that the funding was ultimately aligned with the requirements of the purchase order."
"At Seriti, we recognise the importance of developing sustainable local businesses and enabling capable entrepreneurs access to the funding and support their need to deliver on those opportunities," added Nyaniso Rapiya, Inclusive Procurement and ESD Manager at Seriti. "uNotho Holdings represents the exact type of enterprise we want to see growing within the mining sector."
"This transaction was unique as it required co-funding with other lenders, given the mandate limit of R3.5m," stated Khanye Nene, Deal Maker at Edge Growth. "The process presented several challenges and valuable learning opportunities, making the successful disbursement all the more rewarding."
