BlueOrchard Climate Action Mobilisation Fund Reaches First Close With $250M

The Schroders-backed impact investor secures significant institutional capital for its flagship blended finance vehicle, creating an investment-grade path for private deployment into emerging and frontier climate strategies.

ZURICH / LONDON — Impact investment manager BlueOrchard (a member of the Schroders Group) has officially announced the successful first close of the BlueOrchard Climate Action Mobilisation Fund (BOCAMF) with USD 250 million in commitments secured.

The blended finance fund bridges the massive climate-financing gap in emerging and frontier economies, where requirements are projected to reach approximately USD 9 trillion annually by 2030, by channeling long-term institutional capital toward climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives.

Innovative Blended Finance and Investment-Grade Structure

BOCAMF stands out as the first blended finance fund focused on emerging and frontier markets to issue notes carrying a publicly available investment-grade rating from a leading international credit rating agency.

The transaction architecture was co-created with private-sector participants and development finance institutions (DFIs) to satisfy strict regulatory requirements, such as Solvency UK Matching Adjustment eligibility for institutional life insurers:

"The successful first close of BOCAMF demonstrates what can be achieved when institutional investors, development finance institutions and investment managers work together to design solutions around investors’ needs," said Michael Wehrle, CEO of BlueOrchard.

Strategic Capital Deployment Across Emerging Markets

BOCAMF deploys diversified private debt through two core mechanisms: senior loans to financial institutions (such as banks and microfinance providers) that channel climate finance downstream to SMEs, and direct corporate lending tailored to sustainable infrastructure.

"By demonstrating that institutional investor requirements can be met alongside meaningful climate impact, the Fund helps create a pathway for greater commercial investment into emerging markets," noted Leslie Maasdorp, CEO of British International Investment. "Each successful vehicle strengthens the market, builds investor confidence and makes it easier to replicate and scale future structures."
