JOHANNESBURG — South African township broadband provider Ilitha Telecommunications has secured a R500 million ($30 million) debt financing facility from Absa Corporate and Investment Banking (Absa CIB) to expand its last-mile fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network across South Africa's township economies.

The financing facility provides long-term debt capital tailored to support infrastructure rollout, allowing the telecommunications operator to accelerate aerial fiber deployment, pole installation, and household connections in historically underserved communities.

Debt Financing for Township Broadband Expansion

Led by Chief Executive Officer Vuyani Jarana, Ilitha focuses specifically on deploying high-speed broadband in high-density township neighborhoods that major commercial fiber operators have historically bypassed.

The R500 million ($30 million) debt injection from Absa CIB will fund capital expenditures required for last-mile infrastructure, including high-capacity aerial fiber optic cables and localized network poles. The capital deployment is structured to support Ilitha's multi-phase expansion strategy, targeting high-volume household connectivity across target provinces.

Network Footprint and Value-Driven Operating Model

Ilitha currently operates broadband infrastructure across 27 communities in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, having recently launched its network presence in Mthatha.

Unlike traditional post-paid fiber models that require fixed monthly contracts, Ilitha operates an uncapped, prepaid subscription model designed for lower-income and variable-income households. The network architecture delivers between 200 Mbps and 300 Mbps of aggregate capacity per connection, supporting up to 15 concurrent devices per household to maintain service quality.

Beyond core internet access, the operator integrates value-added digital services directly into its connectivity ecosystem. Key partnerships include digital healthcare platform TruMD for remote consultations with registered medical practitioners and SpecCon for accredited online learning and skills development. The new capital facility will allow Ilitha to replicate its operating model across additional township markets nationwide.
