ACCRA & TAMALE — Ghanaian agricultural technology company Vitara Agritech (formerly Sommalife) has raised €1.8 million (~$2.0 million / GHS 30.5 million) in an early-stage equity funding round.

The investment was led by the European Union-funded AgriFI facility (managed by EDFI Management Company), alongside social impact investor Acumen and a syndicate of private angel investors.

The deal marks the inaugural direct equity deployment through the AgriFI Ghana Country Window, a €10.0 million (~$10.8 million) dedicated mechanism established to enhance smallholder inclusion, climate resilience, and income generation across northern Ghana's agricultural value chains.

Technology Deployment & Sourcing Infrastructure

Vitara operates as an agtech-enabled off-taker, using proprietary digital tools to eliminate informal intermediaries in the raw shea supply chain:

  • Proprietary Traceability Stack: Capital will scale TreeSyt, Vitara’s proprietary software platform that digitizes smallholder farmer profiling, tree monitoring, plot mapping, and end-to-end commodity tracking from farmgate to international industrial buyers.
  • Fintech Integration: In partnership with MTN Ghana, Vitara has integrated direct mobile money API endpoints into TreeSyt, enabling instant digital payments to women collectors in low-connectivity rural communities.
  • Demographic Reach: Women represent 91% of smallholder collectors across Vitara’s sourcing network. Over the 2025/2026 harvest season, the company engaged 47,000 active women farmers, with over 150,000 producersregistered on the TreeSyt platform.
  • Producer Economics: Vitara’s direct sourcing framework, fair pricing structure, and pre-financing mechanisms have increased smallholder household incomes by 20% compared to traditional informal market channels.

Market Dynamics & Strategic Context

Ghana produces between 130,000 and 150,000 metric tonnes of shea nuts annually, serving as a primary exporter for a global shea market projected to surpass $3.0 billion by 2030.

The sector underpins the livelihoods of over 1.0 million women and youth in Ghana. Sourced shea fat serves as a crucial raw material for international cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and cocoa butter equivalents (CBE) in chocolate manufacturing.

The equity injection aligns with Ghana's macro policy shift toward domestic processing and value addition, supported by regional infrastructure projects including the new national shea-processing hub in Wa.

Executive Statements

"This support from AgriFI, Acumen, and our angel investors will allow us to expand our work with women producers, strengthen the reach of our solutions, and build a more transparent and sustainable shea supply chain," stated Mawuse Gyisun, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Vitara.
