Nimba Mining Finalizes $300 Million Glencore Pre-Financing Deal to Accelerate Strategic Mineral Assets

The strategic agreement locks in multi-hundred-million-dollar trade-backed liquidity and guarantees off-take channels for up to 60 million tonnes of Guinean bauxite.

CONAKRY — Guinea’s state-backed Nimba Mining Co. (NMC) has finalized a landmark commercial agreement with global trading titan Glencore, securing over $300 million in pre-financing alongside a five-year bauxite offtake contract.

Announced via national television broadcasts, the partnership represents a major test for Conakry’s ongoing strategy to diversify international industrial alliances and capture deeper value within the domestic mining sector.

Structuring Trade-Backed Liquidity and Offtake

Under the terms of the agreement, Glencore will manage the commercialization of 10 to 12 million tonnes of bauxite annually. Over the five-year duration, total volume commitments are projected between 50 and 60 million tonnes.

The accompanying pre-financing package injects crucial capital directly into Nimba Mining Co., allowing the state enterprise to bridge early-stage operational bottlenecks without relying on traditional sovereign debt instruments. By tying financing to future resource extraction, the arrangement guarantees secure commercial offtake while supplying Glencore with reliable, long-term trade volumes across its global alumina and aluminum supply chains.

"While Nimba Mining Co. is a wholly state-owned company, the aim is to turn it into a mining champion," noted Minister of Mines and Geology Bouna Sylla, emphasizing the administration's push to empower domestic operators in heavy industry.

Advancing National Value Capture

The deal highlights a broader policy push led by the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Economy, Finance, and Budget to shift Guinea’s mineral wealth beyond raw extraction toward active economic integration. Finance officials framed the alliance as a "win-win" structure designed to bolster state revenues, secure predictable income streams for domestic assets, and attract Tier-1 institutional capital into West African resource corridors.
